December 22 – Were Not Our Hearts Burning Within Us?

Luke 24:30–34 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together and saying, “It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.” Today’s Reflection A person who lacks compassion is often described as a person with a heart of stone. But this is not completely accurate. The unredeemed heart is more like an ember; it appears to have no life or heat, but buried deep inside, it still has the potential to ignite into flame. It just needs access to the pure oxygen of the truth of God. Walking to Emmaus, Jesus revealed the truth about himself as found in Scripture, but it was not until he was preparing to share a meal with his followers that “their eyes were opened and they recognized him . . ..” Their hearts burst forth with joy, and they said, “Were not our hearts burning within us while we talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” They left Emmaus immediately to return to Jerusalem to tell the other followers the good news: “It is true! The Lord has risen…”
